As mixed martial arts/ultimate fighting and Brazilian jiu-jitsu gain even more international recognition, one champion is winning the respect and heart of fans and other fighters around the world. Joe Camacho, known throughout the fighting world as “JC Plentee of Skills,” does not disappoint and has amazed fight fans and opponents with tremendous displays of skill and artistry as an ultimate figher. While there is no denial that Camacho has been blessed with plenty of skills as a fighter, his greatest asset is his humble nature and commitment to bring honor and respect to his sport. Camacho exemplifies the term professionalism and is widely recognized as a role model for the continued advancement and recognition of the sports of mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu into the mainstream.
In November 2005, Camacho made his international fighting debut in Japan under Team Boon America. He was the only fighter from the United States who was extended an invitation. Other countries represented at the competition included Japan, France and England. Camacho proved himself as a world class talent and left fight fans wanting more when he knocked out his Japanese opponent with a slamming left hook within 1 minute and 15 seconds of the first round. Camacho’s explosive performance earned him a long term contract with Team Boon America and guarantees his return to Japan. On January 13, 2006, Camacho’s international tour will take him to the beautiful island of Guam. Camacho will also be fighting in Osaka, Japan on March 4, 2006, under Team Boon America.
Camacho’s journey to becoming a world-class fighter began almost a decade ago. As a fan of The Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), Camacho watched in awe as Royce Gracie (“Gracie”), a slender Brazilian, made history and won three individual UFC titles in the 90’s. Gracie’s victories were most certainly unexpected since most of the time he fought at a weight disadvantage of 50 pounds or more! Despite his size, Gracie defeated one opponent after another through implementing Jiu-Jitsu techniques developed and mastered by his family over numerous decades in Brazil.
Camacho, standing at 5’9” and weighing 160 pounds, became inspired and intrigued by Gracie’s skills and began his own intense training to discovering the power and mystery of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu . Camacho’s cousin, Charlie Valencia, a world-class wrestler and professional fighter, took an interest in his training and taught Camacho submission wrestling, an element of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and essential to becoming a well-rounded fighter. Valencia’s skills further inspired Camacho as Valencia, standing at 5’4’ and weighing 140 pounds, easily and effortlessly submitted fighters much larger than him.
In the beginning, Camacho did not know the future that awaited him as a fighter. All he knew was that he had stumbled upon a new passion that he could not live without. While going to school full time and holding down a full time job, Camacho still found time to train and pursue his dream. Camacho did not stop his training at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and expanded his knowledge of martial arts to include Boxing, Kickboxing, Muy Tai and submission wrestling.
Having mastered all techniques, Camacho was unleashed in the fighting world and immediately made headlines. Camacho’s great success and notoriety even earned him a feature in a cage fighting documentary, “Enter the Cage,” depicting the behind the scenes drama involved in extreme cage fighting. The documentary contains one of Camacho’s bloodiest victories which sent a loud message to the industry that Camacho is a force to be reckoned with. The documentary will soon be released and available for purchase by consumers.
Camacho has been training and fighting under Team Aloisio Silva located in Manhattan Beach for close to 10 years and is currently working on his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He competes in various prestigious Jiu-Jitsu competitions throughout the year, including Pan Am, Coppa Pacifica, National Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament, International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Competition and Grappler’s Quest. He also competes in ultimate fighting competitions at venues such as King of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge and Japan’s Deep-Real Rhythm.
Camacho was born and raised in East Los Angeles and currently lives in Ontario, California. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1991, the same year as “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya. Camacho went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in art and design. Despite his intense training and fight schedule, Camacho works full time as an art director for a local Southern California company. He also teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and manages a number of other fighters competing under his name.
Camacho is close to his family and attributes his success in large part to the love and support of his mother who raised him as a single mother. Camacho is no stranger to the struggles of life and is determined to be a positive role model to other young male Hispanics, particularly in East Los Angeles, following in his footsteps. Camacho is a proud Mexican-American and remains true to his Mexican roots. He leaves no doubt about his love for his heritage and regularly sports a fight mouthpiece depicting the Mexican flag!
